Questions started with “Where?” are probably the most frequently asked ones in our daily life and work. However, it may not be as simple as we can imagine to answer these questions properly. It involves how we can determine our location, how we experience and understand the world around us, how we can determine and describe the relationship between people, things and places in the three-dimensional space, and how we can navigate from one place to another efficiently.

In this “Positioning 101” seminar, we will try to revisit some of the very fundamental but easily forgotten concepts. Some technical definitions will be explained in plain language, and some “Did you know?” facts and interesting stories behind positioning will be shared. The topics covered will include the development of address and coordinate systems, as well as the evolution of the positioning and navigation technologies (PNT). Last but not the least, the importance and future development trend of PNT in the era of digital information, internet, and Big Data will be discussed.
