Event Name : Exploring 3D Pedestrian Network and Generative AI in Urban Design and Planning
CPD Code : Formal Events
Speaker : Professor Alain Chiaradia
PhD, MArch, BArch, GDip Econ & Stat. (Dist.), AA Grad Dipl., FHKIUD, UKAoU, MULI

Alain Chiaradia is an Associate Professor and Deputy Head of the Department of Urban Planning and Design at the University of Hong Kong's Faculty of Architecture. He holds positions as Vice President of the Hong Kong Institute of Urban Design (HKIUD), a Member of the Urban Land Institute (ULI), and an Academician of the Academy of Urbanism, UK.

Professor Chiaradia's research interests lie in network-based morphometrics and design thinking, focusing on understanding the health, social, economic, and environmental impacts of urban design and transportation. In Hong Kong, his research delves into pedestrian network, pedestrian movement in high-density, volumetric urban environments and the wider economic impact of transport networks' configurations. His applied research has been internationally recognized for its outstanding impact in terms of reach, rigor, and significance.

As the Founding and Inaugural Programme Director of the Master of Science in Urban Design and Transport at the University of Hong Kong's Faculty of Architecture, DUPAD, Alain has made significant contributions to the field.

Prior to joining the University of Hong Kong, he spearheaded the conceptual development of the 3D Spatial Design Network Analysis software (3D sDNA) at Cardiff University, which provided hundreds of environment variables for BiobankUK, leading to award-winning health research on the impacts of the built environment. sDNA is now utilized by urban professionals and researchers worldwide.

Alain's previous experience also includes serving as Executive and Board Director at the global consultancy Space Syntax Ltd., where he directed large-scale projects related to spatial policy analysis, urban design policy formulation, and evidence-based spatial design. He has contributed to hundreds of public programme and private sector design projects in the UK and in major cities such as Paris, London, Boston, and Shanghai.

Throughout his career, Professor Chiaradia has taught award-winning design studios at institutions, including the Architectural Association (AA), MIT, Columbia GSAPP, the Berlage Institute, Domus Academy, and other renowned venues.

Details :

In this seminar, we will delve into the innovative applications and potential implications of 3D Pedestrian Networks (3DPN) and generative AI in the realm of urban design and planning. The presentation will feature insights from the HKU team, who have been at the forefront of 3DPN development, focusing on walkability and accessibility analysis. Participants will gain an understanding of the diverse applications of 3DPN, as well as the importance of 3D datasets in urban analytics and social science. Additionally, we will explore the role of generative AI in spatial analysis, discussing both its advantages.
